Textile Projects by David Tremlett – Arte Fiera Bologna 2016

“The project for the Antonio Verolino Gallery was born at the beginning of 2015 with the proposal for a tapestry, which was followed by the proposal for a carpet. The tapestry would have been made in Felletin, Aubuson, France and the carpet in Nepal or Pakistan. I spent the next few months tracing idea after idea on paper, until I had completed 4 tapestry designs and 4 rug designs.

On July 20th I took a flight to Lyon and together with Antonio and Raffaele Verolino we went to Felletin by car. As soon as I entered the Pinton Atelier I perceived the particular atmosphere, the scent of the fabrics, the quiet noise of the people at work, the colored yarns all lined up, the sense of tradition that continues and the passion for ancient techniques that have never been overcome. Then we had the opportunity to see the translation of one of my drawings from pastel to wool, from a 60 cm² sketch to a 3 m² tapestry, thanks to the work of many hands who weaved warps and wefts on a large loom.

After having viewed and approved everything, Lucas Pinton and I shook hands as if to confirm our satisfaction and we all went together to eat andouillette and vegetables in a beautiful local restaurant. Once lunch was over, Antonio, Raffaele and I spent the next 3-4 hours in the car on the way back to Lyon, then I left for London.”
